ImmersionRC rapidFIRE Power Mod

This post will be just the power mod for the older FatShark goggles. I will have a full review on the ImmersionRC rapidFIRE module coming up once I get more time to use it.

The ImmersionRC rapidFIRE module needs more power than normal modules. The newer Fatsharks like the AttitudeV4 and Dominator HDO can supply the correct voltage to use the rapidFIRE out of the box. Just plug the module in your new goggles and you’re good to go.

For people who are using older Fatsharks like all the Dominators besides the HDO, you need to mod the goggles to supply the rapidFIRE the extra juice it needs. There are three ways to do this:

  1. Use the supplied ribbon cable and module to do the mod. Download the manual for instructions on this
  2. Send in the goggles to ImmersionRC to have the power mod done
  3. Do the power mod yourself

The actual mod is super simple. The hardest part is taking the goggles apart to get to the component to do the mod. Follow this tutorial and I’ll show you it’s super simple to do. The video above is about 13 minutes long and that’s with me babbling about nonsense. The actual mod start to finish only takes about 5 min.

Here’s a quick soldering tutorial if you are unsure of your soldering skills.

I’m using a soldering vise to hold the module in place while I solder.

Do the rapidFIRE Power Mod

I will be doing the mod on my Dominator v3 non-HD. If you are interested in the power switch mod on my goggles, I have a full post on how to do that.

Remove the head strap from your goggles.

Remove the three philips head screws on the bottom of the goggles.

Use a small flat head screwdriver to unseat the 4 clips that holds the faceplate on.

There is a clip under where my right thumb is. Press firmly here to unclip it and the whole shell will come off.

The module that needs the mod is on the left. Slide that out of the bottom half of the goggles. To remove the ribbon cable, slide the black clip back and the ribbon cable will come out easily.

The part circled in red labeled L1 is the part that needs to be modded. Instructions from ImmersionRC say to remove this part and put a solder bridge across the two leads. Unless you have a hot air rework station, removing a surface mount component is tricky. You risk lifting or burning the pad.

A better way of doing this mod is simply putting a tiny jumper wire across the two leads. Electricity flows in the path of least resistance. The jumper wire essentially bypasses this component by shorting it. The best part of doing it this way is that it’s completely reversible.

Once the mod has been done, just do everything in reverse to put the goggles back together.

To confirm the mod worked, plug in the rapidFIRE in the goggles and power it up. Scroll to the “About” section in the menu and you should see “Low Pwr : No”

That’s it! The mod is super simple to do once you know how to take the goggles apart. I’m so excited to try this new ImmersionRC rapidFIRE module. Check back soon for the full review with comparison videos!

If you found this post helpful, it would be super cool if you purchased the components from my store or purchase items from my Amazon links. These posts are expensive and take a loooong time to make so the purchases make it possible for me to keep making them. Thanks in advance, I greatly appreciate it 🙂
